Where Anyone is Possible

It never ceases to amaze me at how many people enter role playing communities and games without the slightest idea of how to actually role play. Being a newb is all well and good and I would never begrudge a new comer. But if you do not know the basic rules and conduct of role playing, then put those little fingers to work and do some research online or even ask someone for help. Some of the ancients ones are more than happy to give assistance to someone new to role playing, personally.

As a quick run down, and minus any confusing terminology for those not familiar with the world of RP'ing, there are some things that you simply can not do in a role playing situation: You can not write the actions or response of others. That should be a no-brainer. You can not control the actions of another person IRL so why on earth do you think you could do so in a role playing situation? You control you, your actions, and your responses to others ONLY. It not only does not make any sense, but is crossing a line into someone else's territory. There are very few exceptions and few actions that would even require a built in response to the post to begin with.

So you can not do something as stupid and walk into a room and kill everyone in sight. You are NOT God and thusly can not play as such. Any really why would you want to? That would kind of make for a very boring place if everyone was dead, would it not?

OOC: if this has been written in response to my actions at the vampire coven this morning, I would like to point out that I never named anyone as being killed. All I said was that some of the vampires present were being shot. You were more than welcome to kill all of my soldiers if you had wanted to. Or you could have escaped from the fighting. Or you could up with something even more clever to do.

Instead you chose to make it all an illusion, thus stepping on my toes. Which seems like a waste. Anyways if you were referring to something else nevermind
I was not naming names but pointing out a general topic of conversation; however, since you have drawn attention to your post I will point out that it was very bad form.
A. You can not attack, without being present. Trying to send some mindless hoard after others is not good sportsmanship, further, in trying to keep yourself from a possible attack is an extreme form of godmodding.
B. It is generally understood that only a GM can sufficiently control armies of npc's because it completely throws off the mechanics of any normal role playing situation.
C. You admit you attacked without addressing who you were attacking, again, very bad form. You have to name the person that your attack is addressed towards to be considered a valid move in most role playing settings.

There are a few other things that I could point out, but the point of this conversation was not to bicker over your post but to help others learn and improve the art of role playing.

For the record, my response was completely within my abilities and given the poor sportsmanship of the attack, was a fair response.
I have been following this conversation with great interest. I am not certain that any of you are in the wrong, and I think that each of you have valid points. I also believe that greater communication might have made all of this run more smoothly, and I encourage you all to take advantage of the private messaging feature that becomes available when you friend someone to work out plot points outside of the flow of story.

I have also started a thread - http://www.rolepages.com/forum/topics/the-rules where I would like to discuss the formation of a list of guidelines regarding conduct on this site. I invite all of you to please join me over there and voice your opinions as to how the rules of this site should be set out.
