Multiverse Roleplaying Chat Room

Main - Tavern Roleplaying Chat Room

The History

The RolePages.com community has been growing exponentially over the past few months. In this time, one of the most popular features has been the chat room, which is located in the toolbar at the bottom right hand side of the screen, on every page of the website. The chat has acted as a kind of main stage, with features such as the forums, worlds, blogs, and status updates, all working to support the main events which take place within the actual chat room.

As the site has grown, members have flooded the site. While it is wonderful to welcome new friends to our community, this influx of new people has also at times clogged up the single main chat room that we have available. There can be as many as thirty people present at a given time, causing the chat to scroll at a very fast pace, and making the room confusing and unreadable for all but the quickest of eyes.

To compensate for this, several secondary chat systems have been tried. Many of them have had severe flaws in the interface, and reliability. As each program has been tested, it has also been discarded in favor of a new one. Finally we have settled on a relatively feature rich flash based chat system. So far we have no had any reports of errors or issues with members getting into this chat. If you have trouble entering either of the role playing chat rooms please report the issue so that we can resolve it.

Multi-verse Chat

The original chat system continues to be available from any page of the site from the toolbar at the bottom right hand of the screen, as well as from the tab in the top navigation bar.

In order to separate the two, the original chat has been renamed "Main Chat" or "Tavern Chat" the latter reflecting the fact that the default location of the roleplaying happening in the chat seems to be centered on a magical tavern.

The new chat has been dubbed "Multiverse Chat". This is because unlike the original, which features only a single room, the new system allows for an infinite number of customizable rooms, which can be created both by administrators, and by users. This allows any roleplaying scenario or possibility which can be imagined to have its own, separate, private chat room, to conduct the actions of the story in.

There are a wide variety of benefits that the new roleplaying chat system contributes to the site. There are multiple rooms giving you a variety of role playing locations, there are a wealth of smileys, font options, avatar choices, and flash emoticons. There is also the vital ability to ignore members which may be acting disruptive during a role playing session.

This chat also acts as a pressure valve for the influx of new users who have signed up for the site. When the main chat room becomes too busy, users can slip into the Multi-verse Chat, and use one of the rooms provided.

The new chat also provides a variety of features that the original was lacking. This includes advanced moderation tools which can be set up to run automatically, or which can give site administrators greater control over the activities of the space. There are also a variety of customization options for the user such as the ability to change text size, font type, text color, and the use of smilys or sounds. There is also the potential for customization, with custom sounds, smilys, rooms, and avatars available for those willing to play with the options.

The new chat also has a chat log feature which can be enabled for special events. This allows us to record the text of chat during certain ocassions, such as the recent tournament. This text can then be posted to a blog, where everyone will be free to enjoy the action, whenever they like. This can allow stories to gain a wider audience, because even those not present at the time of the action can see exactly what happened, and then engage it through comments and replies.

Feature Requests

One of the great things about the new chat is that it has the ability to upload custom smilys, pictures, and sound clips. There is also an option to add custom permanent rooms, although this is being done at a very slow and cautious pace. If anyone has a custom smiley, or a sound that they would like installed in the new chat, please send images, and or sound files to rolepages@gmail.com - In order to ensure timely response, please also indicate your request on the comments below.
