If he thought she didn't catch the millisecond of fretting she saw in his expression when she offered her help, he had another thing coming. However, that subject seemed to upset him more than she cared to bother him, so she didn't press the issue, instead pursuing the matter of hero business.
Laughing a bit, she bumps his leg back with hers, her expression softening. "Well, I guess the only question I really have is simple," Betty replies, her hands fiddling with the hem of her pants about her crossed ankles before her. She had a few questions, of course, but the one she asked was the one that weighed the heaviest on her mind.
"Are you happy where you're working?" It didn't matter what he was working on to her as long as he was pleased with it and he was safe. She'd already figured that Tony Stark's labs were probably safer than she even imagined. If Bruce felt comfortable enough to work there and was enjoying what he did, then it was good enough for her.

Betty gives him a reassuring smile, her hand reaching up to rest on his, giving his hand a gentle squeeze. "I'm not too worried about it, there's absolutely nothing of military interest in my work at the moment. I wouldn't look into anything... suspicious. At work, I mean." The way she phrased it and the slight look she gave him was almost like she was hinting at him that she'd help if ever he asked.
Abandoning the position facing him, she turns to sit next to him more comfortably, her shoulder not just brushing his, but full on against his. She crosses her legs beneath her once more, one of her legs almost overlapping his. Betty rests her head comfortably against the back of her couch, her head tilted back to look up at her ceiling. "I know better now to never do at work what you fear others will steal."
She turns her head to face him, still resting it back against the couch, still smiling softly. Blue eyes flick over his form before she gives his arm a gentle nudge after making sure that arm wasn't holding his water. "Are you allowed to talk about what you're up to, or is that strict hero business?" she says the last bit in a joking tone. Bruce in a group of superheros. She never would've guessed he'd be where he was today when they first met.

After nodding politely in response to his gratitude, she huffs a sigh, looking down at the pillow in her lap. "At the moment, I've hit a brick wall in my work. It's just me and four--well, three, now--graduates wasting time in the lab." She tilts her head up to give Bruce a wry smile. Brick walls in research named "US Government" were regular occurances around people who have been known to deal with volatile subjects in the past.
They weren't going to find anything damning, SHIELD was doing a spectacular job of keeping her out of trouble... for the most part.
"I'm sure we'll be mildly harassed for another week or so, then we'll be able to work in peace again." At the moment, Betty was simply observing in her field. If she was entirely honest with herself, she was quite through with testing anything potentially 'dangerous' for a very long time.

Betty could hear his footsteps take him to the living room. At least he wasn't hanging in the doorway anymore. Him being so close to an exit made her a bit nervous. Bruce was always ready to bolt these days. Pushing those thoughts from her mind, she delivers the glass to him with a smile that clearly informed him that she was most definitely up to something and that there was no chance he was going to find out through questioning.
Taking a seat on the couch next to him, she sits cross-legged, a throw pillow in her lap and her body turned to give him her full attention. "Relax," she reminds him softly, reaching out to gently lay a hand on his arm, her mischievous smile turning into a more nurturing one he knows quite well. She had said "make yourself at home", though Betty highly doubted that meant pretending like her couch was going to swallow him.

Standing in the kitchen threshold, she watches him speak. He was rambling slightly, something he did often that never failed to make her smile. But now he was asking for a glass of water and she jumps to action, ducking her head in a little nod before disappearing into the kitchen.
"Make yourself at home, Bruce," Betty says as she retrieves a glass from the cabinet. She was doing her utter best to keep her cool and be a good hostess to him instead of jumping him with another big hug like an over excited teenager like she wanted to.
As she fills up the glass, the scientist wonders to herself if she can sneak a kiss in today under the excuse of "It's my birthday". Or maybe she could just use the guise of "I miss you". Her lips quirk upwards in a secretive little grin as she concocts multiple plans with several contingencies. Betty knows for a fact that just a simple kiss won't have any green consequences... provided that she didn't surprise him too bad with it.
