Abel is outside on his hammock again while a baby red dragon is sleeping on his stomach. He is swirling his Mike’s Hard Black Cherry and he said, “Ahhhhh this is the life.”

Mialee Stormborn

Mialee Stormborn arrived the way most people did, by portal. She had, after a few long grueling days of menial labor and magic work, earned enough to buy herself a portal coin. Now, if she knew the location on the planet, she could go there. This location was marked on the map given to her, but did someone really just.. Let people adopt dragons? As a wizard, she would love nothing more than to care for one of these mystical beasts, so Mia popped over for a visit. She stood at 6′ tall with snow white hair, sky blue eyes, and porcelain skin. She wore shirt, half sweater, and normal pants of different shades of blue accented with white. On her back was a pack, and her belt held a rapier on one side, and a leather bound tome on the other. She looked around, and saw Abel on his hammock. “Excuse me.” She started politely, “I heard rumor that one could… Adopt a dragon here? Is this true?”

Abel Cross, The Dragon Caretaker

Abel opens one eye and he sees her, he slowly gets up while holding the sleeping dragon and said, “Well you’re at the right spot but the wrong island, but I am the caretaker of Grimvale Islands.” He stands up and as he reach his hand out for a handshake he said, “Name is Abel Cross, protector of dragons and one of the councilmen of Twine.”

Mialee Stormborn

The woman nodded a bit, a soft smile rested on her delicate features. Abel could see the elvish features on her face, and the short tip ears sticking out of her white hair proving her half elf heritage. “Well met, Abel Cross. I am Mialee Stormborn, heiress to the clan and, uh, a far traveler apparently.” She didn’t mean to the island but like many before; she’d plane shifted here by accident. “I do apologize, if you wish to move to a different location, tell me where.” And with that, she took out her portal coin.

Abel Cross, The Dragon Caretaker

“Here is fine,” Abel said as he opens the door, “Ladies first, but be careful because there is a dragon that will tackle anybody down.”

Mialee Stormborn

“…” With that she spoke in Elvish ‘Protect my Body.’ As the wizard waved one of her hands over her form, casting Mage Armor and adding a magical barrier to her. Then she nodded and headed in, bracing herself bravely against an attacking dragon?

Abel Cross, The Dragon Caretaker

As she walks in a bluish white angelic dragon is hopping and as she jumps in midair she yell, “HELLO!~” And lands on Mialee.

Mialee Stormborn

Even with the mage armor, the wizard wasn’t fully protected from the glomping dragon. She looked up just in time to see this azule beast come down on her, and Mia fell over with all of the sudden, extra weight. “Oh! Owch!” She groaned as she fell back, falling on her pack and lightly slamming her head against her bedroll. “Ugh. Hi.” She responded in common to the dragon, this felt a bit more like home.

Abel Cross, The Dragon Caretaker

The dragon looks at her and ask, “My name is Erin! What is your name?”

Mialee Stormborn

“They call me Mialee, but Mia works just fine.” If allowed, the half elf reached up to pet the creatures head. Even go as far as scratching behind the ear if she was well met. “It is nice to meet you Erin.”

Abel Cross, The Dragon Caretaker

Erin lets her and smiles as she is being petted. Abel is leaning on the door frame and said, “Yeah all dragons on the island are playful and good.”

Mialee Stormborn

Mia nodded, carefully getting up and keeping this friendly dragon in her arms as she continues the pats. “Well, this seems to be quite an elegant place. I could see myself spending a lot of time here.” She admitted. There was nothing more that she liked than knowledge, and mystical beings such as dragons peeked her curiosity infinitely. But, unfortunately she was previously engaged. “So, is it just you that cares for these dragons? And do you rescue them? Or are they bred on the islands?”

Abel Cross, The Dragon Caretaker

“Rescue, breed, you name it,” Abel said as he went behind the counter, “And you are more than welcome to stay here if you want, we got plenty of space in Grimace City and this bar is called Dragon Scales Bar, you could say that the prices are cheap and have different kinds of dragons.”

Mialee Stormborn

“I would love too. Really. But, I can’t.” The Half Elf approached the counter, still with Erin in her arms. “In the future though, I might take you up on that offer though. Now that I know such a sanctuary exists, my intellectual curiosity is peaked. But.” She reached down and placed the beast upon the ground. “For now, I do have other things that need to be taken care of. So… How much is it going to cost me to adopt a dragon?

Abel Cross, The Dragon Caretaker

“Just your loyalty and trust,” Abel said as he hands her a clipboard with all of the rules, “Under in any circumstances that the dragon that you adopt will never be harm, be use in inhumane experiments, never turn them into materials, etc.”

Mialee Stormborn

Mia took the clipboard and read over the rules, nodding with each one. “I understand. I, Mialee, here by swear on the honor of my clan to never use any dragon presented to me in such a way. My dragon will be my familiar, my honored partner and pet.” She wanted to speak out in protection of dragons, but it was her kind the most, wizards, that hunted dragons for their blood, scales, etc, to craft magical items. But not her, and not with this one.

Abel Cross, The Dragon Caretaker

Abel nods and said, “Now I just need to answer a few questions on your preference of what kind of a dragon you want.”

Mialee Stormborn

“Ask away, sir.”

Abel Cross, The Dragon Caretaker

Abel nods and said, “As you know there are different types of elements and that same law implies with dragons as well, so the first question is this, what type of element do you like?”

Mialee Stormborn

“Hmm.” She thought for a moment, considering her options. If the dragons here were anything like those at home.. “Well. Either Ice or Lightning. But I need to ask something. Back on my world, the chromatic dragons were normally evil and greedy by nature, and the metallic are good and wise. Does that hold true here?”

Abel Cross, The Dragon Caretaker

Abel nods and said, “Although that rumor is true, but here there is no chromatic dragons here.” Dante jumps on the counter as he is wide awake and he said, “For example, Dante here is a Devil Dragon, not because of being a devil, he prefers to be something hot and loves spicy foods.” Dante starts to scratch his head like he is a puppy. “And the dragon that you met is a Angel Dragon.” Erin nods and said, “Yup! I help people!” Abel looks at Mia and said, “Dragons have different breeds, not based on their color or chromatic and metallic and besides if there is a chromatic dragons running about on the islands then it is my sworn duty to protect the good dragons and citizens on these islands.”

Mialee Stormborn

She nodded in understanding. “I get it. Thank you for answering me.” ‘And hello Dante.’ She wasn’t sure if this dragon could talk like the other, but she spoke in Draconic anyways. Then back to Abel. “I would not harm a good dragon, or even a neutral one, but the dragons that are evil and attack me; well there is no choice there.” She shrugged, the ugly truth of the subject.

Abel Cross, The Dragon Caretaker

“I know how it feels when it comes to that,” Abel said as he leans back on the shelf behind him, “I used to be a hunter and hunt dragons for a reason…” He looks at his right arm and said, “I’m just glad which ones to save before it was too late…”

Mialee Stormborn

“I’ve never hunted a dragon. But I hear brave tales in the pubs of mighty dragon slayers, including those in my family.” She admitted with a nod. “Either way, the good ones require our care and respect. So this sanctuary is excellent. I will replay this kindness you are showing me someday, when I come back I’ll spend much time volunteering.”

Abel Cross, The Dragon Caretaker

Abel gave a big smile and said, “And that answered question four.”

Mialee Stormborn

She smirked. “Oh? I was still being tested. Was my answer satisfactory?”

Abel Cross, The Dragon Caretaker

He nods and said, “Very satisfactory so far and don’t worry about the first question there are always hybrid dragons here so you can have two-in-one, but as for ice and lightning…now that’s a new one for me.”

Mialee Stormborn

She crossed her arms. “I mean, I didn’t expect that. Nor did I expect both. One or the other would suffice as well. Though…” She put a hand to her chin, tapping it. “Lightning please.” She offered the man a bright smile. There was a soft scar across her right eye that was only visible in the right light.

Abel Cross, The Dragon Caretaker

He nods and jot down some notes and said, “And don’t worry I know that you’re part elf so you are safe here.”

Mialee Stormborn

“You seem to want peace, I also want peace. I sensed that I could be safe here, but thank you for that. That idea of so many dragons in one place can be a bit intimating though.”

Abel Cross, The Dragon Caretaker

“It is at first when I started the sanctuary,” Abel said as he looks at her, “But you will get use to it which reminds me…do you need anything to drink? We got other drinks besides alcohol.”

Mialee Stormborn

She looked around at the bar she was in, not really considering this place as somewhere to wind down in… But why not? “I’ll take a drink actually, rum please. Straight.” She took off her bag and reached inside, to pull out her money purse. From within, she took out a single GP, minted by the Waterdeep bank. “Do you take gold pieces as currency? Or I can barter? Foreign places as be very strange.”

Abel Cross, The Dragon Caretaker

“We do but this is on the house,” Abel said as he pulls a couple of glasses and a bottle of rum, he points at the empty table and said, “Let’s sit there and continue with the questions shall we.”

Mialee Stormborn

Mialee put her pouch back into her pack. Then with a nod, the Stormborn headed over to the table and took a seat. “Very well Abel Cross. Please continue with your questions.”

Abel Cross, The Dragon Caretaker

Abel sat down in front of her as he pulls the cork off and as he is pouring some rum for themselves he ask, “Question two….wait you already answer that. Question 3, will you be part of the community after you adopt a dragon? I know you already sorta answer it, but after you are done what you are doing, will you?”

Mialee Stormborn

Mia sighed a bit, taking a sip of the poured rum when it was ready. The taste was superb, the texture smooth and almost no aftertaste. “With honestly, my plan it to return home to my world of Toril. But, I do wish to come back and spend time with your dragons. If I can keep in contact in between worlds, I will..”

Abel Cross, The Dragon Caretaker

“Even though you won’t be part of the community you will always be part of Grimvale,” Abel said as he put the clipboard down, “Now when we get you either an egg or a newborn dragon, then you will have to keep it warm if the dragon isn’t hatch or have food ready to show that you care.”

Mialee Stormborn

“Hmmm.” Mialee considered her options. It would be far too troublesome to have a dragon egg with her. “A new born would work better. Now I have trail rations on me, but I doubt that will do. I will hunt a wild animal if I have too, to bring food to this dragon and establish a bond.”

Abel Cross, The Dragon Caretaker

“Don’t worry I got that part covered,” Abel said and with a smirk he said, “I think I got a perfect dragon for you.” Then he gets up and heads upstairs real quick.

Mialee Stormborn

When Abel left the table, Mia went through her bag to pull out a notebook and inkpen. She quickly notated in elvish shorthand what she had done today, and what she had learned. She was still writing by the time Abel returned.

Abel Cross, The Dragon Caretaker

Abel came back down with a baby black dragon with yellow wings and said, “This here lost his mother a few months ago when I was doing a excavation in one of the forests in Twine, I haven’t thought of a name yet but this is a Volt Dragon, black metallic color with yellow wings and at a right age he can zip through like a volt, his favorite food is any cooked meat that are not human but he will eat anything.” He place the dragon in front of her on the table and said, “Go on and say hello, Mia.”

Mialee Stormborn

Mialee’s attention moved from the pages of her book over to the stairs as Abel returned with her new dragon. It took every ounce of the noble woman’s proper bearing to not squeal in delight as she first laid eyes upon the shiny black dragon. “Aweeee.” She said, putting the pen down and getting up. ‘Hello, little one.’ She spoke in Elvish to the young creature, then sat down so her blue eyes were level with him.

Abel Cross, The Dragon Caretaker

Abel gently pets the dragon and said, “If he gets close to you, let him sniff you so he can judge you if you are worthy.”

Mialee Stormborn

The white headed wizard nodded. She casually put her hand on the table, between herself and the dragon; ready to be judged.

Abel Cross, The Dragon Caretaker

The dragon start to sniff Mia’s hand, then he climb up on her arm and stares at her. His tail starts to wag and start to licks her cheek. Abel smiles and said, “Awe he trust you, now you just need to name him and feed him something.”

Mialee Stormborn

“A name, huh?” She stated as the creature climbed up her sleeve, perching itself on her shoulder and started to lick her face, which made her smile. “Uhmmm… Hmmm. How about…” She thought for a second or two. “I will name you Avalon. And you will be my familiar.” She replied with a growing smile, then looked towards Abel with a nod.

Abel Cross, The Dragon Caretaker

“Avalon is a perfect name,” Abel said as he pets the dragon’s head, “And don’t think dragons as a pet, think of them as a child.” Dante climbs up on Abel’s shoulder with a bottle of hot sauce and start sucking on it.

Mialee Stormborn

Mialee reached up to pet her own dragon, who presented its head already ready for pats. It seemed happy as the female half elf showed it quite the affection, already falling in love with the creature. “I see. I’ll try.” From what it looked like, there was going to be no issue or neglect in the way Mia would treat him.

Abel Cross, The Dragon Caretaker

Abel nods and said, “Glad that you two are already best pals.” Then Abel put a clipboard down with the adoption papers and said, “All that I need is your signature and initials then you will be all set.”

Mialee Stormborn

Mia nodded and took the adoption papers and a pen. Quickly, she scribbled her name. But actually, the calligraphy was quite fancy thanks to her constant writing. The document read out her complete, true name, Mialee Cresentmoon Stormborn. MCS. “Could I trouble you for that cooked meat now? I wanna make a solid impression.”

Abel Cross, The Dragon Caretaker

A plate appeared in front of her out of nowhere with a grilled ham steak, Abel looks at her and said, “You’ve ask then you shall receive.” He looks at the shadows and said, “Thanks Shade.” Then a black dragon with purple wings came out of the shadows and salutes at them, then submerges himself back into his domain.

Mialee Stormborn

Mia nodded towards Shade, the black dragon in the shadows. Then, from her bag, she pulled out a shiny dagger. With that dagger she started to cut up the meat, feeding some chucks to Avalon slowly. “Thank you, very much, for this. I swear I’ll repay you, one day.”

Abel Cross, The Dragon Caretaker

“Don’t mention it,” Abel said as he sat back down, “For now just focus on connecting with Avalon then once you visit again then I can ask you to volunteer around here, deal?”

Mialee Stormborn

The wizard got up and nodded, her hand sticking out for another shake. After which, she bowed her head, and used her portal coin to exit the island; back to Persistence where she had taken up refuge in the Red Sun Inn. And now to create a nest for her new partner.
