Acetyl The Hunter

Acetyl found himself around an old campsite, old blood stained the trees and dirt. The place was familiar shrouded beneath a layer of trees though the area was unmistakable – it was the site they had killed the cannibal. That disgusting old hog was long gone now, but it brought him back to the days the guild was still thriving and expanding.. plus the entertainment he’d earned from casting Zera into the Fray. He smiled as the crackling of fire kept the dark at bay.

Zera La Fae

Unable to go home due to the evacuations of Twine, Zera did what she normally did when she couldn’t sleep – she went for a run. It always seemed to help clear her mind and help her focus on whatever it was that she was struggling with. The forest she entered seemed oddly familiar as she neared the old campsite. Her pace slowed as she neared, seeing the light cast by the fire dance around on the canopy of remaining leaves that still clung to the trees above. The blood may have been long since washed away, but the place was still unforgettable. By the time she reaches the old campsite, her pace had slowed to a walk and a small smiles tugs at a corner of her mouth as she sees Ace. “Somehow, it is not surprising to see you here.”

Acetyl The Hunter

“Well I do keep the everlasting scent of death around me,” he replied, though keeping himself from looking up at her, not that he’d had a grudge but the fires irresistible charm kept his gaze upon it. “Though I’m not sure what you expected Zera, I’m not one to keep within a house or apartment for the sake of comfort. Why are you out here? Obviously you still have the studio apartment, eh, uh, sorry. Mansion.” He let a sigh pass his lips as he laid back against the dirt, his eyes shifting toward the clear skies.

Zera La Fae

“Twine and Grimvale were both evacuated after Kida went batshit crazy thanks to the golden cloud and all the problems the FaE are causing. I can’t go home, not now at least.” She steps into the circle of fire light and sits down beside him. Her breaths have slowed a bit, but her heart rate was still elevated from the run and a thin sheen of sweat clings to her skin, thin rivulets slowly trickling downwards. She sighs softly, looking upwards as well. “I couldn’t sleep so I decided to go for a run and ended up here.”

Acetyl The Hunter

“I see, such is a beautiful time to partake in such times. The cooler weather must help with exhaustion.” Acetyl would take a glance at her. Zera had always upheld a sense of beauty; not that it much helped, but the fires roaring flames flickering across her features solidified the thought. He sighed, there was still a grim topic that loomed between them. “Zera, what do we do from here? Lime was really the only one who’d kept me in check.. gave me a purpose other than slicing open innocent humans and draining them like a slaughtered pig. I know that I have you, of course, but eventually you’ll end up dead by some fucking dragon or god knows what else then I’ll be alone with my sword and a lust for blood.”

Zera La Fae

Zera nodded and sighed, running a hand through her hair. It was slowly getting longer, the combination of the length and being slightly damp from sweat and night air causing it to curl a bit more. “Honestly.. I don’t know either. I was half expecting never to see you again after the night I told you what happened.”  She turned her eyes from the skies to look at him. She was so used to seeing him behind that mask of his, it was odd to see him without it after he smashed it against the floor after she told him of Lime’s demise. “I love you, Ace, but I don’t know if that is enough, or fair to either of us for that matter.” Dragons. It had been a while since she had seen the one she was bonded to. The connection was still there, so she knew he still lived, but he had been gone for some time.

Acetyl The Hunter

“I love you too Zera, but you’re right.. I’d only be denying you the chance of a normal life with someone who you could settle down with and live your lives together.” He took a steady grasp of dirt into his palm before closing his hand and allowing the dirt to slip through his fingers. “Your lives are so fragile, so little time.. you’re doing well for someone alone.” He’d sigh quietly, holding out his hand until the dirt had completely emptied. “I’m not sure anymore.”

Zera La Fae

A normal life? The thought was almost absurd to her at this point, causing her to chuckle. “Any chance of a normal life was taken away almost eight years ago.” She looks down at the betrothment tattoo on her finger that was traditionally given en lieu of a ring from her former home – one of the few remnants of her past life aside from a pocket watch and a photo. She let out a slow shuddering sigh. After years of running for her life, she had finally found a new home on Hellifyno, and a new family in the guild. Now that it was being taken away once again, it felt like someone was ripping what was left of her heart out. She hated this. She wanted to be happy, and she wanted more than anything to share it with him, but as he had pointed out, he was not human.

Acetyl The Hunter

Slowly, Acetyl took her hand into his own as some semblance of comfort as his thoughts further dimmed. “Y’know my time is coming to an end. I’ve outlived my time by generations and you’ve seen what has happened to the plain I walk.. it’s a disaster. You have shown me that even in the darkest of times even the dullest of light can bring a sense of warmth and comfort, but I think it’s time to make a choice.” Acetyl’s hand slipped from her grasp as he slowly stood. “Would you like me to stay here with you, by your side as either lover or friend? Alternatively I can just end the trouble I’ve caused for you, try to absolve the pain” He’d take a silver sacrificial dagger from his leg strap, holding it firmly as it burned away at his skin.

Zera La Fae

Zera was on her feet in an instant, looking from his face to the dagger in his hand. Her eyes glistened in the light of the fire, tears threatening to fall down her cheeks at the prospect of him doing what he was suggesting. She wasn’t ready to let him go, but she understand what he was saying. He has had a long life, and has lost a lot in his lifetime, far more than she could possibly imagine. His home, his daughter, and now Lime and the guild. When she finally spoke up, the words were unsteady, reflecting the unease that she felt in her heart and her mind. “You know how I feel, and that I want you to stay, but what is it that you truly want, Acetyl?”

Acetyl The Hunter

“I don’t want to be a monster anymore. I’m so tired of it..of the blood shed and death.” His eyes turned to his hand, the blade specifically. “I must have killed at least an entire country worth of innocent people by now.” He let out a sigh as the skin on his hands had slowly turned into exposed muscle and bone. He was clearly pained by this, although a strong attempt to hide this was in play. Instead placing his cold hand against her cheek, slowly leaning until their foreheads met with each other and pressing his lips against hers if she’d allow it he’d kiss her. “I’m..I don’t know,” he’d whisper quietly.

Zera La Fae

The first tear fell from her eye as their foreheads met. Most people would be taken aback by the cool touch, but it was comforting. Her lips trembled as they met his, tears flowing unhindered from her eyes now, as her one hand went to try to take the dagger from his hand. She was going to lose him, she knew this now, and there was nothing she could do to stop him if that is what he wished. “I don’t want you to go.”

Acetyl The Hunter

“I know, I know, y’know.. often I am upset that I cannot fall in love, but I guess it just means I won’t have to worry about it.” He slowly wrapped his arms around her back, laying his head against hers to reassure her. “I’m going to be gone for such a long time and you’ll probably miss me.” He tried to hold up a smile though it failed, Zera instead feeling the gentle pattern of teardrops hitting her head. “I’m sorry I couldn’t stay my darling, but you need to live your life without people like me – those who drain the life out of a room.” He’d stepped back, tears sliding down his cheeks as he took the knife to his heart. “I’m going to miss you so much.”

Zera La Fae

“Ace, no! Don’t leave me!” She puts a hand to her mouth to keep from screaming out, followed by the other one. This wasn’t fair! He was always leaving her behind.  She was always left alone. Fighting back tears, she reaches out to grab him, to try to stop him – to try and do something. Anything! This isn’t what she wanted. “God dammit, why?! Why can’t I be with you??”

Acetyl The Hunter

“Simply because I don’t want to watch the woman I love die, again.. to lose another would destroy me. Zera, I will not watch you fall because I wasn’t there to stop them.” He smiled plunging the dagger into his chest, gasping loudly as blood slowly began pooling from his chest. He took a step back out of shock as he felt the knife enter his heart, something he’d not felt in a while. His breath parted as he fell back blood trickling from his mouth, his breathing erratic.

Zera La Fae

“And what of me?! I’ve already lost everything once and now you want me to go through that again! We could still have time together!” She was screaming, frantic now. She gasped as the dagger plunges into his heart, the shock of him doing such a thing feeling like someone had knocked the wind out of her lungs. “NO!” She ran over to his side, grasping him to steady him. “Don’t go where I can’t follow you!”

Acetyl The Hunter

“You’ll be here..in time.” He smiled, laying his head back before finally closing his eyes and drawing his last breath.

Zera La Fae

“ACE!” She started panicking to the point of coming close to hyperventilating. She pulled the dagger out of the wound trying to stay focused enough to think what to do next. The vampbrace. Zalos gave her a brace with a crystal that could heal..but it was not with her, nor was she even sure that it would even help even if she had it with her. Frustrated, she let out a long mournful scream to the skies before failing down to the ground, her body raking with uncontrollable sobs. Why? Why would he choose this over her? Her head was pounding and her throat dry. She closed her eyes as the last of  the glowing embers of the fire’s light died down. For now, she would sleep if she could.
