It was a snowy Halloween night. My husband John had been out and about with our daughter, trick or treating for some time now.
Jack-o’-lantern shadows danced about our cozy little cabin as I sat, watching the news. There was a murderer that had escaped prison a few days back, and I was wondering if they had caught them yet.
An hour goes by, and the news begins to repeat itself. I guess there hasn’t been any sighting of him yet. Oh well…
I got a call from John shortly after.
“Hey hun, we’re done in town but little Willow wants to trick or treat around the neighborhoods in the area, are you okay with that?”
“Of course, John. Whatever makes her happy, and as long as you two are safe..”
“Thanks, mommy! C’mon papa let’s go!!”
“Haha alright, sweetie. Talk to you later Nicole.”
“Bye, John. Stay safe.”
God, I love those two. They’re the most precious people when they’re together. Too bad she isn’t a little more like me, but it’s good to see them so close.
I started a pot of coffee, seeing how, of course, I wouldn’t be able to get any sleep without him beside me, and it’s going to be a while before they get back.
Crap.. sink is full of dishes? How much can those two possibly eat?? I giggled a bit to myself before filling the sink with soapy water and drowning myself in thoughts as I washed away.
My phone vibrated, telling me I had a text. John, maybe?
“window” is all it said.. I didn’t recognize the number.
Looking out the window above the sink, I seen a man standing in the snow. He was staring straight at me..
It’s hard to make out in the glare of the kitchen lights but.. Is that… a knife in his hand?
Of course, I started to panic. I called 911 right away.
“911, what’s your emergency?”
“There’s.. a man outside my house with a knife.. he’s just staring through my window..”
“Alright miss, what’s the address, we’ll send help right aw-…”
Signal lost… Why at a time like this? Why now?!
I had been pacing back and forth for a while. I looked back out the window, only to see the man even closer, still just standing, staring, …smiling?
I called John, only to be sent to voicemail. My breathing got heavier.. mind racing, heart pacing… I looked back out the window one last time, he was very close. He…
There are no footprints in the snow….
He was right behind me
