Her face betrayed nothing but amusement. “Oh, you think that story was true now? Interesting…” It was the truth, but she was certainly not going to confirm it now.

“Alright, the reasons I was taught to fight…” She raised one finger, “Because people like me need to fight for something to even begin to realize our potential. We are not born to be comfortable and at peace. To do anything less then fight for what we believe in our hearts, minds and souls is to settle, and my kind do not settle. That is stagnation and to become stagnant and cease to grow, even if that growth is painful, is a horrible sort of living death.”

She held up a second finger. “I was taught that I should always fight for what I believed in my heart was right because it is the right thing to do. I was born to warrior parents, born and raised to be a warrior, and it is the way of the warrior to fight- to fight superior odds, to fight when all hope seems lost, to fight even our own blood…” She gave a small shake of her head and bitter laugh. “Especially our own blood because no one fights dirtier or more brutally than blood. Only family knows it’s own weaknesses, the exact placement of the heart. We still may one day have to fight it and feel infuriated by the fact that kinship lasts through life and death, immutable, unchanging, no matter how great scope of the misdeed or betrayal. Blood cannot be denied even when we have to fight against it with tooth and claw and will to uphold what we know to be right.”

She held up the last finger. “I was taught to fight because a person who has nothing for which they are willing to fight, nothing which is more important than their own personal safety, is a miserable creature and has no chance of ever being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of people who are far better and stronger they are themselves and that is a fearsome sort of slavery because it’s one you have sold yourself into for no better reason than fear and weakness.”
