The Barghest [Zaire]

Howls sounded through the forest, the beast padding across the terrain with a corpse held between its jaws. Only the beast knew whether the corpse had been killed by /it/ or by a zombie. Even internally, Zaire had no idea at the moment what was happening. It made its way into a cave, curling itself against the back wall with its kill pinned between its paws. Bones crunched and flesh ripped as it tore into its prey. And the worst part may have been the wag of its tail as it consumed whatever humanoid it had taken. It could /feel/ Zaire’s presence within their shared mind, snarling as she began to question if it had killed someone or not. She was too loud, in its opinion, and her questions were annoying. What did it matter if the Barghest had killed this person or not? It was a hunter, a predator, that’s what it was meant to do.

Kaler Eland

[Did history enjoy repeating itself so often here on Hellifyno? Or did it like to continually up the ante every time it happened? It seemed so as of now, with zombies were back once again to terrorise the populous. And the resident sunboi could not be more disheartened by this. He was also somewhat angry too, but knew not what to do with himself at the moment save for either helping civilians who remained, or getting away from the noise, as much as he could; which was hard when Zombies where just about everywhere. But here he was, alone and walking through a Consequence forest; one place which seemed less swarmed by the walking dead maybe due to the remoteness of the area, save for one lone straggler, who immediately bound towards him. To the nearby cave, an alert to someone being nearby was given via the rather charred corpse of a zombie being smashed into a wall, after being pushed some distance by distinctly golden beams of energy; someone’s heat vision maybe. Perhaps the inner Zaire, or even the Bargh, recognised such; even so, someone was approaching]

The Barghest [Zaire]

“Oh, look, someone roasted a corpse for me. How thoughtful.” The beast rose from its place within the cave, stepping just that much closer towards the mouth of the cave. It lifted its nose to the air, taking a few deep breaths. “Ah, if it isn’t the little sunny boy.” Its fur bristled as it growled. “One more person trying to “save” her?” The idea of Zaire taking control, of her shoving the beast back into a cage, infuriated it. The flames that made up its fur glowed almost as brightly as its different colored eyes, a snarl rippling through the night. “Well, I know you’re there. Might as well show yourself.”

Kaler Eland

[At first, the sunboi had no clue the beast was nearby or in that cave where his shot target had landed, sizzling with steam and mostly charred to a crisp; incineration or near-to full burning via high temperatures seemed to do wonders for destroying the voidlings. He seemed to be mumbling to himself, or letting out a long, pained sigh as he continued his stroll through the woods, ever closer to that cave, before he heard a voice calling out, supposedly to him. A growling voice, but from what? Couldn’t be a zombie, or /the/ zombie he just cooked, so…] Who’s there…? [Called the sunny one as he made a slightly faster stroll to the mouth of the cave, peering around to see who exactly had talked towards his person, his eyes sizzling back down to their mellow golden glow instead of like a blazing furnace]

The Barghest [Zaire]

If it could grin, it might have. “I’m hurt you don’t remember me,” it said with a rumbling, broken growl. Almost as if it were laughing. It kicked its hind leg, pushing what was left of the charred corpse away from it. It took a look at Kaler, that single crimson eye seeming to glow. Oh, it remembered the Solarian all too well. It remembered that he had been one of the ones that helped shove it back into a cage the last time. It snarled at the sight of the sunny one, fur rippling with flames, those claws gouging the earth beneath them. “What is it you want? I’m not going back into a cage,” it snarled at him. “I REFUSE to be shut away again. She could be so much more powerful with me, and yet she still denies me? Becuase of the morals of a man who left her when she needed him most?” It scoffed. “She’s almost as pathetic as the rest of the population of this planet.”

Kaler Eland

[His golden optics would follow the shoved remains of the zombie rolling away from the cave, before they centred in on the Bargh itself. Initially puzzled, Kaler’s memory began to go into overdrive, remembering this thing from a little while back, back when he had helped Zaire along with a few other of her friends or acquaintances. As if the day hadn’t been annoying enough; he was able to decipher quickly, especially once it spoke again, that Zaire was in there somewhere, just like before, his face lowering some into that of an annoyed yet determined look] Well I would love to find a way to stop the zombies, but, now I guess I have you to deal with… I think… [It was easy enough the last time, but how on Hellifyno would he free Zaire now on his own? Dang it] Well, I think my /friend/ enjoys a life away from senseless hunting unlike yourself…. [He took a few steps closer to the beast, not so much intimidated yet still wary] And I know she’s in there… S-so I would love it if you let her back out…

The Barghest [Zaire]

While Kaler had been speaking, the beast had turned back to its original kill and began munching on the corpse once again. “That’s the thing,” it said after a moment. “I’m a predator, /the/ apex predator right now. Why would I waste that?” Another growl, and for a moment that crimson eye flashed yellow. Shut up. Shut up! SHUTUP! Zaire had been rebelling, had been trying to regain control. But nothing she did would make it listen to her. Its head shook for a moment, the crimson flooding that iris once more. “And just because you /want/ me to let her take control doesn’t mean I’m going to. Why would I?” It turned its gaze onto him, a broken growl rippling free. Almost as if it were laughing at him. “You’re already the third that’s come to me and tried to get me to let her take over again. First it was someone who has literally no knowledge of who Zaire even is. Then it was that hunter…. what’s his name? Oh, right. Randall. Now you. I wonder if /those two/ will come for her. I wonder if their emotions will cloud their judgement just as it’s clouding yours.”

Kaler Eland

Because… it shouldn’t be your right to invade her like this. [He said plainly, whilst internally he was having a bit of a brainstorm which lead to no true endpoints. He didn’t know what to do, if he was to even fully get her free here and now; and it even spoke of others who had tried to get her out of this things shell. Did he know a Randall? He thought he did, or at least saw him once… or not; the memories didn’t always play back that well for him but he tried his best. The mention of ‘those two’ was lost on him as to who they were, whilst he just let out a sigh, though he did notice that flashing of eye colours] Cmon Zaire, fight it… [He mumbled quietly to himself, as he watched the beast momentarily struggle with itself; maybe the warm radiance of sunboi was having that effect, maybe even since Zaire shared a similar power basis] Well, maybe I stand a better chance, she is my friend, a-and I don’t appreciate you latching onto her like this… [He could only imagine what its eaten in the time its been in control, which he didn’t really want to imagine right now; his fists did clench some as he stood there, but, wouldn’t hurting this thing hurt Zaire?]*

The Barghest [Zaire]

That smug look returned to its eyes as it started to circle the sun boy, growling. “Invade? Let me tell you a secret, boy. I’ve been a part of her since she was born. We’ve shared one mind and one body for decades. And just because she /fears/ me, she wants me shoved in a cage.” After a moment, it turned, hitting its head against a wall, snarling. “You don’t stand a chance,” it growled, but it almost seemed as if it were saying that it itself more than Kaler. “You can have the pathetic one back when I’m /done/ with this world.” It rumbled, turning to look at him again. “You want to know what sent her spiraling again? It had nothing to do with these…” It kicked a zombie corpse. “Things. But everything to do with the fact that she couldn’t handle having children. She took one look at them and bolted. Because of Siclides. Because of what he did to her poor, fractured mind. Is it really my fault if I’m the stronger of the two? That I don’t let my emotions rule my actions?”

Kaler Eland

[Well this wasn’t a very good revelation. All the way since she was born; no wonder she was fearful of it. He was pondering on just what this thing could be then, for it seemed to be quite paralytic] So what does that make you? Some… some parasitic virus that enjoys the soul of a Yuki? [He questioned, as he would follow the beast with his eyes and head, but didn’t make too many moves of his own, still watching and listening to what it had to say. Still he continued mentally supporting Zaire, as it seemed to become annoyed from time to time before coming back to its senses. It was starting to dislike this thing’s personality more and more, though so too was he surprised and questioning as to what it was saying, about her having children; what was wrong with the children? And then there’s the obvious part of the equation, the 10ft tall demonic man] He’s not been seen for a long while now… I-I’d say with certainty that he’s gone for good. [Along with that maid hivemind and a lot of other prominent figures here…. so very silent in the streets now, but anyway] So already I have an advantage…. a-and I’m sure she can hear what I’m saying too… [Or, he hoped she could; dang it he wished for a better sign than head-butting into walls] You offer her power maybe, b-but what good is it if she has no control over that power?

The Barghest [Zaire]

If it could roll its eyes, maybe it would have. But it let that right eye shift to yellow once more, and it let Zaire have a single moment of control. Not enough to change her back into herself, but enough for her to speak. To prove she was, at the very least, alive. “Kaler? He’s… gone? For good?” There was a little hope in her voice, but the beast quickly regained control and growled. “See? If I wanted her dead, she would be. And I’m /not/ a parasite. Without me? She wouldn’t have the opportunity to replace her grandfather one day. She’s just a little too young to do such a thing right now.” It tilted its head, almost as if it were surveying Kaler for a moment. “Such a “good” person, aren’t you? ANd how does it feel knowing your “friend” is so in love with two different Soulless? That she’s actually married to one of this world’s most powerful villains? Not even that fox compares to the things I’ve learned about her darling Augustus.” It scoffed once more. “She’ll have control. Maybe. If she ever lets herself grow stronger and actually accepts that I’m not going anywhere. We’re not meant to be separate beings. We’re meant to fuse. But her /fear/ just won’t let her do it.”

Kaler Eland

[She was in there, he knew it, thank goodness for that. He held hope for that voice of hers, moving to quickly answer her claims before this thing had her pushed back under] Zaire, I… y-yes, I’m certain of it… [For he was certain that the primordial entity would’ve taken any chance to come for him to get Zaire to come back out of her apparent hiding, but it had been a long while since he last heard of it from the Yuki and her sister, and well, no sign of him. In fact he had spoken to a number of people and they hadn’t seen him either. Finally bored for life perhaps. He continued listening to the rambling of the Bargh, not quite understanding everything it told, like Zaire replacing her own grandfather, amongst others. But, well, the worst thing it could’ve said was the apparent love interests of the Yukifren, which caught him in a state of conflicting thoughts] …w-what? But…. no, she wouldn’t, she…. [His eyes blinked numerous times, staring at one spot on the ground whilst the Bargh kept talking. She wasn’t that ‘desperate’… was she? Was that what she had done whilst she was hiding? And what was he supposed to do now? No no cmon Kaler, focus on this thing first, focus…] Y-your idea of control is twisted… y-you’ll make her what she doesn’t want to be, I’m sure of it…

The Barghest [Zaire]

“I wouldn’t say she’d /never/ be with someone like him. But, she is. And her children are his too.” The beast laughed, seemingly pleased with Kaler’s reaction to its revelation. It laid across the floor after a moment, pinning its kill between its paws. “Is it really /so/ bad that I’m taking advantage of the multitudes of prey that the rest of the world is just killing and leaving to rot? I’d say that I’m doing a public service, wouldn’t you?” Its tail flicked lazily. “She doesn’t want to disappoint her precious Augustus. And accepting the strength that I can offer would certainly be the first step in doing just that.” It huffed. “And don’t even think about ripping me from her. She’ll die if you do.”

Kaler Eland

[Why. Why now out of all times; why does everything have to coincide with a world-ending catastrophe. He doesn’t even know half of what’s happened over the past day or two, and here he is trying to deal with a world infected with void /again/ and a friend who’s infected with a controlling beast and supports the void to an extent, potentially. He didn’t comment on its first bit, choosing to ask Zaire herself about it afterwards if he could manage, instead waiting for it to stop speaking. He did however step even closer to the thing, much closer now; perhaps the lack of fear for it in Kaler’s eyes would intimidate it at all?] W-whatever her reasoning… I’ll talk with her about it, but /after/ she’s more or less normal…. [But how could he do it now? Was there a way at all?] Dang it Zaire…. If you can hear me at all, even now, just…. Focus on me, if it helps. Focus on what you can maybe, j-just maybe see through those eyes, me, the forest, whatever else you can see just, try…. [A fight against the mind perhaps; it was a common movie trope but maybe it’d work out a bit here?]

The Barghest [Zaire]

If the beast had eyebrows, it might have raised one at Kaler’s attempt at intimidating it. But, even so, it gave him a little bit of a compromise. “I will let you speak with her. But that’s all you get for now.” It closed its eyes for a moment, only opening them when the right eye was that bright yellow once more. “I’ve been able to hear you this whole time,” she argued. “Just… I suppose it’s only fair that the Barghest shove me into a cage like I have done to it all this time.” She nuzzled against Kaler, nudging his hand with her head. “It wasn’t lying, you know. I am…. I did marry Gus. But he’s not that bad, really. He’s helped me a /lot/.” She blinked, turning her head so that blue eye was more visible. “Siclides… he took my eye. And had it not been for Gus, I’d still be missing this eye. It was just by chance that it turned blue once it was reformed.”

Kaler Eland

[He let out a sigh of conflicted thoughts. Well, at least it was somewhat willing to do /something/ out of its comfort zone, it seemed. Clearly he wasn’t going to win this fight anytime soon, unless something occurred that he could take advantage of, but for now he could at least hear Zaire’s voice again. He would listen to what she had to say to begin with, dropping his head some out of shame almost, though remained looking down towards her, or her in Barghest form] Sorry Zaire…. I’ve not know what to do, and with the planet back to apocalypse state well… i-it’s confusing… [He spoke, a finger or two rubbing back against her head some; he could understand that, but not the Barghest’s attitude and general outlook on life] That’s good then I guess, a-and you’ll be glad to know that thing is /gone/, I-I’m sure of it, but I….. hmmn…. i-if this Gus truly means no harm on the world then, I-I’ll be happy for you Zaire…. but it’s worrying me with all the void going around the world now… [He pouted some, wishing he could do something to help the world quickly]

The Barghest [Zaire]

“I know he’s looking for me. I just…” She paused, her tail wagging slowly behind her. “I don’t know if I’m ready to go home yet.” Her voice dropped in volume a little, and she shoved the corpse away so she could rest her head on her paws. “I don’t want my children seeing me like this. They’re still too young to understand what’s going on, I think. But that doesn’t mean I want to be like this when they /are/ old enough.” But they needed her, and she knew it. “When I get back to normal, I’ll make sure they meet Uncle Kaler.” If she could smile in this form, she would have. But, for now, she stood up and began to move towards the mouth of the cave. “It’s because people like you exist that the world always comes back from these horrible things. I know you’ll figure out how to make it better. You always do.” And with that, she trotted off into the forest to find herself somewhere to sleep that didn’t reek of death.

Kaler Eland

That’s understandable…. maybe… when you do choose to go back, I… I could go with you even, just as an incentive or something, or… [He sighed again, still not knowing what he should do right now. So his fears had been lessened, he was still conflicted of her being accepting of all the void stuff, right after all the chaos of recent times and especially yesterday, though that might be something to talk about another time it seemed] I hope so…. bye Zaire, s-stay safe… [He offered some of a wave as she went someplace else. Alone again, another lengthy sigh emitted, and a portal dropped to take the boy back to his own home. Contemplation time was needed, and headspace; loooots of headspace]
